S.boulardii is capable of directly and indirectly interfere with harmful bacteria to reduce diarrhea:
Saccharomyces boulardii interferes with harmful bacteria toxins such as Clostridium difficile or Escherichia coli by:
blocking pathogen toxin receptor sites
acting as a decoy receptor for the pathogenic toxin
direct destruction of the pathogenic toxin
In case of antibiotic usage the normal gut microflora is reduced but Saccharomyces boulardii is able to restore the normal microbiota.
